Dr Paul Brain

Since 2004, Dr Brain has been in post as a Consultant Psychiatrist at South West London and St George’s Mental Health Trust where he runs an extensive NHS practice.

He holds a number of clinical posts in the NHS including being the Consultant Psychiatrist for Wimbledon Mental Health Team, the Merton Assessment Team and, until recently, was also the Consultant for the Complex Depression and Anxiety Service.

Dr Brain has been a significant contributor to the development of NHS mental health services in the local area over the past decade and is an Associate Clinical Director in the NHS Trust. For many years he also had a mental health advisory role to two local CCGs.

As a psychiatrist with over twenty years’ experience, Dr Brain is skilled in the assessment and treatment of the range of general psychiatric conditions including Anxiety and Panic Disorders, OCD, PTSD, Personality Disorders, Schizophrenia and Psychotic illnesses. He has a particular interest in the field of Mood Disorders including the diagnosis and treatment of more atypical, complex and treatment-resistant Depression and Bipolar Disorders.

Training

Dr Brain trained in Medicine at Guy’s and St Thomas’s Hospital, London, becoming a doctor in 1994. As well as graduating with a Medical degree he attained a First Class Honours degree in Psychology. He undertook his psychiatric training at St George’s Hospital and became a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in 1999. He is approved by the Royal College as both a General Adult Psychiatrist and a Substance Misuse specialist.

Research Interests

Dr Brain is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at St George’s Hospital Medical School and is involved in the teaching, training and examining of medical students and junior psychiatrists. He is also a designated Appraiser for other consultants undertaking their annual appraisals for GMC Revalidation.

Dr Brain’s approach to treatment is a holistic one that is very much focused on working collaboratively with his patients. He encourages the development of an integrated psychological and pharmacological treatment plan but also has a particular expertise in complex pharmacological management.
