Dr Rik Coetzee

Consultant General Adult Psychiatrist

About

Dr Coetzee has over 20 years of experience as a consultant psychiatrist and took up his first consultant post at the Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham in January 2005. During his time in training in Nottingham, he worked at the Centre for Trauma Studies for 2 years, which was a self-funded NHS unit at the time, specialising in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This is where he developed a special interest in post-trauma psychiatry, which led to him joining the Ministry of Defence (MoD) as a civilian consultant psychiatrist in 2007. Dr Coetzee subsequently joined the Royal Navy as a medical officer and consultant psychiatrist in 2010. He was appointed as the professional head of Royal Navy psychiatry in 2014 and as the professional head of psychiatry for the UK Armed Forces in 2016 on promotion to the rank of Surgeon Captain (full Colonel equivalent). Dr Coetzee left the Royal Navy in 2025 and remains employed with the MoD as a civilian consultant psychiatrist. His day-to-day clinical duties involve the assessment and treatment of UK Armed Forces personnel presenting with mental health difficulties.

In January 2022, Her Majesty granted his admission as an Officer to the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem (Order of St John) for his services to military medicine.

Dr Coetzee has extensive experience in the assessment and treatment of psychiatric disorders, particularly common mental health disorders seen in community settings. His special interests include PTSD, adult attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and anxiety/depressive disorders.
