Dr Shanahan offers a comprehensive mental-health assessment and provides evidence-based treatment in a caring environment.

Position at Priory

Dr Shanahan is the Medical Director at Priory Hospital Roehampton and Clinical Director across Priory Group’s Addiction Services. He began his UK medical career as a registrar in the Priory Roehampton in 1987.

Training

Dr Shanahan is a graduate of Trinity College, Dublin. He trained as a GP before embarking on a career in psychiatry and has diplomae in paediatrics, and in obstetrics and gynaecology. He has specialist training in adolescent psychiatry and in addictions.  He was appointed as a consultant in the NHS in 1992, working in what is now the Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust. He was Lead Clinician and Clinical Director of their Addictions Directorate from 1995 until 2013 when he left the NHS. He was Medical Director of the Nightingale Hospital from 2000 until 2019. For 5 years, he was an Honorary Senior Lecturer at Imperial College. He was amongst the first Responsible Officers appointed by them in 2011 and was a GMC specialist examiner for 20 years.

Research interests

Dr Shanahan has a number of publications relating to managing people with schizophrenic illness in the community. He was one of the pioneers in researching the treatment options for people with opiate dependence.
