George Berry

Cognitive Behavioural Therapist

About

George is a cognitive behavioural therapist and mindfulness practitioner. He has specialist training in the three waves of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT). The first wave of CBT focuses on improving our wellbeing by changing our behaviour. The second wave adds techniques to support us in changing our thoughts. The third wave includes additional techniques to support how we relate to our experiences. Third wave traditions comprise acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) and compassion-focused therapy (CFT). These therapies can empower us to move towards what we value, with more mindfulness, acceptance and compassion. George believes all three waves have made important contributions to CBT, and he integrates techniques from all of their traditions within his practice.

After studying a master’s degree in MBCT at the University of Oxford, George became a fully qualified mindfulness/meditation practitioner. Sharing mindfulness/meditation with others is one of his specialties. Whether that be:

  • teaching beginners how to meditate and use meditative techniques to improve their wellbeing
  • exploring barriers to meditation, or working with difficulties within meditation
  • taking regular meditators deeper and further into meditative insights.

Although the three waves of CBT and MBCT are what George has specialised in, he integrates a wide range of therapeutic and mindfulness/meditation traditions within his practice. George believes the best therapists are those who are led by, and tailor their style to, the individuals they are seeing.
