About

Nancy Southcott became an Integrative Psychotherapist at the Priory Hospital Bristol in January 2021. Nancy also has a private psychotherapy practice, and currently is in a senior leadership position in the NHS.

Since 1997, Nancy has held positions including child/adolescent and adult psychotherapist, case management, social worker, and management positions in CAMHS, Adult and Older Persons Mental Health services both in the United States and the UK. Additionally, Nancy was a Clinical Operational Manager in IAPT (Talking Therapies) for Adults in Bristol. Other management posts were in social care, but with a focus on training workers in mental health also.

Nancy has a wealth of knowledge around legislation involving the Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act, Deprivation of Liberties, and Safeguarding guidance and legislation for children and adults. Nancy is a skilled in crisis management, and therapeutic interventions include Solution Focused Therapy, Narrative and Play Therapy, EMDR, CBT, Dialectic Behaviour modalities, Trauma and Attachment, and Systemic Family Therapy.

Training

Nancy graduated with her Bachelors degree in both Psychology and Social Work from University of St. Francis, Joliet Illinois, and furthermore completed her Masters in Social Work at University of Denver, Colorado USA.

Nancy’s masters degree focused on psychology in social work, and completed a years internship in educational psychology at a secondary school. Nancy utilised her training to complete assessments around global communicative disorders and statementing children with special needs in education.

Following her Masters Degree, Nancy started providing psychotherapy in both adult and children statutory services in the community and psychiatric hospitals in and around Seattle WA, USA.

In the early noughties, Nancy secured her LICSW (Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker) licensure in the state of Washington, resulting in capacity to authorise psychiatric holds, and clinical diagnosis of adults and children in Emergency Departments across Seattle.

After moving to the UK, Nancy has had periods of provision of private psychotherapy and completed training in Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR) for trauma.

Nancy finds any chance to improve her learning and enhance her practice with trainings, and most recently has attended international EMDR trainings virtually, solution focused training, and spirituality in EMDR.

Research interests

  • Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Body Memories in relation to physical, sexual, and emotional abuse. (research towards completion of a book, ongoing)

I have been qualified to work in mental wellbeing for over 23 years. I take a holistic perspective to person centred care based on evidence, best practice and research. I have provided psychotherapy to children, adolescence, adults and older persons. I have a speciality around trauma and attachment, but have other areas of interests including but not limited to impact of family separation, sexual, physical, emotional, and financial abuse, anxiety, depression and relationship difficulties. I believe that the person is a partner in treatment, and am interested in seeking feedback that supports enhancement of my practice.
