Suhas Hydros

Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist

About

Dr Hydros is a highly experienced consultant psychiatrist with over 20 years of clinical practice across multiple specialties, including paediatrics and child and adolescent psychiatry. He began his medical career in India and went on to work in specialist paediatric settings across London before choosing to specialise in psychiatry.

He completed both his core and higher specialist training in child and adolescent psychiatry at the Maudsley Hospital, one of the UK’s leading centres for mental health. His training included placements in several nationally-recognised services, such as the national and specialist obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)/body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) team, the Maudsley Centre for Child and Adolescent Eating Disorders (MCAEDS), the Service for Complex Autism and Associated Neurodevelopmental Disorders (SCAAND) team for complex neurodevelopmental conditions (including autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and learning disabilities), the Lishman neuropsychiatry unit and Acorn Lodge inpatient unit for children under 12. He also gained experience in liaison psychiatry at King’s College Hospital and St Thomas’ Hospital, later taking up a consultant post within the children’s psychological medicine team at Evelina London Children’s Hospital.

In his work with generic child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) teams - including Lambeth and Kingston CAMHS - Dr Hydros has managed a wide range of mental health conditions in children and adolescents. These include mood and anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, early psychosis and eating disorders, as well as neurodevelopmental conditions such as ADHD, autism, OCD, BDD, tics and Tourette’s syndrome. He has a particular interest in neurodevelopmental conditions and continues to undertake specialist assessments for autism and ADHD.

During his time as a consultant at Evelina/St Thomas’, Dr Hydros developed expertise in the interface between physical and mental health, working closely with paediatricians and neurologists to support young people with psychiatric presentations linked to complex medical conditions. These included functional neurological disorders (FNDs), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), autoimmune encephalitis, multiple sclerosis (MS), juvenile Parkinson’s disease, chronic catatonia and also sickle cell disease.

He also led the 22q11 deletion syndrome clinic at Evelina, working alongside general and specialist paediatric teams to support children with this rare genetic condition, which is often associated with both neurodevelopmental and psychiatric challenges, including psychosis.

Dr Hydros is known for his thoughtful, collaborative and family-centred approach. He is committed to providing holistic care that takes into account the medical, developmental and emotional needs of each young person he works with.
