Expert-led assessment for an eating disorder

  • Free assessment
  • With an expert
  • Virtual or face-to-face

Taking the first step towards getting help for an eating disorder can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to do it alone. At Life Works, we offer a free, confidential and no-obligation eating disorder assessment, designed to give you the support and guidance you need to start your recovery journey.

Assessments takes place with a member of our specialist eating disorder therapy team. It provides a safe, understanding space to talk about how you're feeling and what you're experiencing.

Whether you're struggling with the symptoms of anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder (BED) or other specified feeding or eating disorders (OSFED), this assessment can help us understand your needs and explore whether our treatment options are right for you.

What happens during the assessment?

Your free eating disorder assessment will take place over the phone or via video call, or in-person at Life Works – whichever option feels most comfortable and convenient for you. The consultation usually lasts around 30 to 45 minutes and is carried out by a member of our specialist therapy team.

During the assessment, you’ll be asked about the challenges you’re currently facing, including your eating habits, physical and emotional symptoms, and how these are affecting your day-to-day life. We’ll also talk about your general wellbeing, and whether you’re experiencing any other mental or physical health concerns.

The aim of the assessment is to gain a better understanding of your personal situation, so we can suggest the most suitable next steps for you.

It’s not a formal diagnosis – rather, it’s a supportive conversation focused on exploring your needs and identifying the best path forward. You’ll also have the chance to ask any questions you might have about our residential eating disorder treatment programme and what to expect.

Who is the assessment for?

This free assessment is available to anyone over the age of 18 who’s concerned about their relationship with food or eating habits. You don’t need a formal diagnosis to take this step – if you’re worried that you might have an eating disorder, this is a chance to speak openly with a specialist and start exploring the support that’s available.

It’s also suitable for people who’ve already been diagnosed with an eating disorder and are now looking for private treatment. Whether you’re just starting to seek help or considering new treatment options, the assessment is designed to help you understand what support could work best for you.

If you’re a family member or friend who’s worried about someone you care about, you can also make an appointment for our eating disorder assessment on your loved one’s behalf – as long as you have their permission. With their consent, you’re welcome to join the assessment too, to offer support and help them feel more at ease. We understand how difficult it can be to know what to do when someone close to you is struggling, and we’re here to help you take those first steps together.

What happens after the assessment?

Following your assessment, our team will talk you through the most appropriate next steps based on your individual needs. If treatment is recommended, we’ll explain the different options available to you. This might include inpatient, day care or outpatient eating disorder treatment at Life Works, depending on what’s most suitable for your situation.

If you decide you’d like to move forward with treatment, we’ll guide you through the next steps – from confirming your place, to preparing for your first day. Our team will be on-hand to answer any questions and make the process as straightforward and supportive as possible.
There’s no obligation to continue after your assessment. This is your decision, and we’re here to help you explore your options in a safe and understanding space.
