Building friendships at Priory Station Road

Read about how Donald has built lasting friendships and developed a strong sense of familiarity.

Donald transitioned to Station Road after living in a care home, where he has now lived for 39 years and has developed a strong sense of familiarity, belonging, and connection with the home.

A place to call home

Donald has built a meaningful social network within Station Road and regards his peers as his friends. He has developed positive relationships with those around him and maintains a very good rapport with other residents. These friendships are an important part of Donald’s life and contribute positively to his emotional wellbeing, social engagement, and sense of belonging within the home.

Donald also maintains a close and positive relationship with his sister. He keeps in regular contact with her, which provides an important source of family connection and reassurance.

A home where Donald feels happy and secure

Donald regularly expresses how much he enjoys living at Station Road. He will often tell staff members and visitors that he is happy in his home and does not want to leave. These consistent expressions reflect the importance of Station Road to Donald and the strong connection he has developed with the people, routines, and environment around him. Staff continue to recognise and value Donald’s wishes, ensuring that his views and preferences remain central to the support he receives.

Supporting Donald to manage difficult situations

When Donald first arrived at Station Road, he could be very temperamental and impatient and would sometimes become involved in disagreements or conflicts with other residents. Through consistent, person-centred support and positive relationships with staff, Donald has made significant progress in managing these situations and expressing his feelings in a more constructive way.

Donald has also become noticeably more sociable and friendly within the home. He laughs more, enjoys positive interactions with staff and other residents, and appears more settled in his relationships with those around him.

This progress demonstrates the positive impact that consistent, respectful, and person-centred support has had on Donald’s wellbeing and ability to engage positively with others.

Person-centred care that puts Donald first

When Donald joined Station Road, he required tailored support to ensure that information was communicated to him in a way that reflected his partial hearing and learning disability. Staff supported Donald by communicating face-to-face wherever possible, using clear and simple language, and allowing him sufficient time to process information and respond. This consistent approach helped Donald to understand what was happening around him, express his views, and remain involved in decisions about his daily life.

Donald’s hemiplegia also meant that he required varying levels of practical support with aspects of his daily living. Staff assisted him with tasks such as laundry, dressing, toileting, and maintaining his comfort, dignity, and personal wellbeing. He also received support with medication administration, attending health appointments, personal care, meal preparation, and managing decisions relating to his finances.

The support provided has been focused on promoting Donald’s independence wherever possible while ensuring that appropriate assistance is available when he needs it. Staff continue to encourage Donald to participate in his daily routines and make choices about his care and activities, while providing respectful and person-centred support that promotes his dignity, safety, wellbeing, and quality of life.

Maintaining independence and meaningful relationships

Donald has developed a strong sense of belonging at Station Road and continues to enjoy positive relationships with residents, staff and visitors.

He is often seen chatting happily with people around him, sharing his thoughts and enjoying social interaction. These everyday conversations and relationships are an important part of Donald’s life and contribute to his emotional wellbeing and quality of life.

Staff actively encourage these interactions and create opportunities for Donald to spend time with others, helping him remain socially connected and involved in the community within his home.

Doing the things Donald enjoys

Having choice and opportunities to take part in activities that he enjoys is an important part of Donald’s life at Station Road.

Donald particularly enjoys going out for lunch at restaurants and visiting the cinema to watch films. These outings provide Donald with opportunities to enjoy activities of his choice, spend time in the community, and maintain an active and fulfilling lifestyle.

At home, Donald enjoys watching older films in the lounge, which is an activity he finds familiar and relaxing. He also likes participating in arts and crafts sessions, giving him opportunities to be creative, develop his skills, and engage positively with others.

Donald also has a pet bird named Billy, with whom he has developed a special bond. He enjoys spending time with Billy in his room and often plays with and interacts with it. This relationship is meaningful to Donald and provides him with companionship and enjoyment as part of his daily life.

The difference consistent support has made

Donald has developed stronger social connections and benefits significantly from regular, meaningful interaction with others. Staff actively support and encourage him to engage in conversations with other residents and members of staff, creating opportunities for him to share his thoughts, express his views, and participate in social activities.

These regular interactions have helped Donald to feel more included, valued, and connected within the home. His positive relationships with peers and staff have also contributed to his confidence, emotional wellbeing, and sense of belonging.

Looking to the future
