Celebrating achievements at Cherrywood House

Since living at Cherrywood House, Michael has made great progress in developing his daily living skills and independence.

Michael* has a learning disability and is on the autism spectrum. He moved to Cherrywood House in 2019, initially, for a two-week respite placement, but over time it became clear that the service could provide the support, encouragement and opportunities he needed to thrive.

Michael is non-verbal and communicates using a limited vocabulary, alongside his own signs and words. He also uses small amounts of Makaton to help express his needs and preferences. Building strong relationships is important to Michael, he enjoys spending time with the support team, has a zest for humour and really enjoys staff laughing and acting in a jovial manner.

Developing independence

Since joining Cherrywood House, Michael has made significant progress in developing his independence and daily living skills. When he first arrived, he required support with many everyday tasks however, with consistent encouragement from the team, he has built confidence and can now take a much more active role in his daily routine.

Today, Michael can help prepare his own breakfast and prepare drinks with support. He can also take his laundry to the washing area independently and make decisions about what clothes he would like to wear. Mealtimes have also become an opportunity for greater independence, with Michael confidently choosing his lunch and evening meal options.

With support from staff, Michael has learnt lots of new signs and sounds, which has enhanced his communication skills and with an individualised activity planner, Michael is able to choose his activities on a daily basis.

Enjoying life

Michael enjoys an active and varied lifestyle, including:

  • Visiting farms, especially pig farms

  • Trips to cafés, pubs and McDonald's

  • Horse riding

  • Picnics

  • Bowling

The support team have encouraged Michael to take part in a wider range of social opportunities, helping him build confidence and engage with others. Michael has embraced new experiences and enjoyed spending time as part of the wider community.

One of the most heart-warming milestones in Michael's journey has been the progress he has made in communicating with his family. Family visits remain incredibly important to him, and with ongoing support from staff, Michael recently learned to say “Dad”.

Through meaningful relationships, tailored activities and opportunities to develop life skills, Michael has achieved greater independence and improved communication, while continuing to enjoy the things that make him happiest.
