When Leilani* moved into Beechley Drive, she faced several challenges associated with her diagnoses of schizophrenia, mild learning disability, and anxiety disorder. Due to past traumatic experiences, Leilani experienced significant anxiety when accessing the community and interacting with members of the public, often lacking the confidence to undertake everyday activities independently.
From the moment she arrived, the staff team focused on building a positive and trusting relationship, helping her feel safe, supported, and settled in her new home. During her first few weeks, Leilani spent time getting to know her fellow residents and gradually began accessing the local community alongside staff, developing both confidence and familiarity with her surroundings.
One of Leilani's earliest achievements was obtaining her bus pass. With encouragement and verbal reassurance from staff, she began accessing the community independently for the first time. Since then, she has made remarkable progress and now regularly enjoys walks in the local area and independently travels by public transport into Cardiff City Centre for shopping and leisure activities.
Key achievements
Leilani is now able to arrange her own appointments, attend them independently, and complete personal shopping trips without staff support. Leilani takes ownership of her healthcare needs, contacting the GP surgery herself when required and keeping staff updated about any appointments she has arranged.
Leilani has also spent time discussing her aspirations and future goals with staff. As part of building her confidence and social skills, she enrolled onto a creative writing course, which she successfully completed. Building on this achievement, Leilani is due to start an arts and crafts class this September. This is particularly significant as she will be travelling to and attending the class independently using public transport.
Leilani also now actively sets personal goals each week and discusses them with staff. These goals commonly include completing personal shopping, visiting local cafés for a coffee, attending appointments independently, and maintaining regular community engagement. Her ability to plan, organise, and achieve these goals demonstrates how far her confidence has grown.
Leilani has also made significant improvements to her physical health. Through maintaining a healthy diet and making positive lifestyle choices, she has successfully maintained a healthy weight and reduced the medication required to manage her Type 2 diabetes. This achievement reflects both her commitment and the positive routines she has established.
Progress with family
One particularly heartwarming success has been the rebuilding of Leilani 's relationship with her sister and nephew. Through regular contact, visits to one another's homes, and support from staff, these important family relationships have become stronger, providing Leilani with additional emotional support and connection.
Leilani's journey over the past year has been inspiring. She has overcome significant barriers, developed her independence, improved her physical wellbeing, rebuilt family relationships, and gained confidence in accessing her community. The transformation in Leilani’s confidence and outlook has been remarkable, and everyone at Beechley Drive is incredibly proud of everything she has achieved and excited to see what she accomplishes next.
