Leanne settles in to Old Rectory Brede with the support of staff
Along with being on the autism spectrum and having a learning disability, Leanne* has complex behaviours and a recent history of physical aggression towards staff.
In the past, Leanne would regularly come to the office and demand attention and often items or money. This would lead to incidents that would escalate, Leanne walking off site, and demanding staff pay her with petty cash.
An initial assessment of Leanne during a managerial change, was that she would use escalation of behaviours as a way to relieve the emotional pressures she was experiencing. To support this, we provided immediate positive behaviour support, and a plan was put in place, with clear guidelines, and an understanding of the importance of communication to ensure she is being heard and supported.
Not giving up
With consistent and dedicated support, we have seen a massive decrease in Leanne’s demanding behaviours, and have even begun to see glimmers of enjoyment in her presentation. There have been times where Leanne has had to accept: “not right now, but this can be addressed with……..on ……..time and date” and she has grown to be accepting of this and has started to interact with staff positively.
Leanne has started to enjoy activities that our home puts on for the residents. Recently, she joined in with Halloween activities helping with growing pumpkins for the year ahead, and she is currently working with our activities co-ordinator to help decorate the home.
“I think Leanne has taken on board changes fantastically, and I look forward to supporting her future development.”
