Shay is now living a meaningful life at Priory White House
Shay* is on the autism spectrum and also has a learning disability. Previous to Priory White House, he was in an emergency placement and before that he had lived in a home for 16 years.
Before coming to stay with us, he was assessed remotely via Teams, with the support of his support workers and care manager, so that we could show him videos and make the transition as smooth as possible.
The staff team created the videos on their phone so they could show their faces and a tour of the home. In previous placements, Shay showed concerning and challenging behaviours and when he first arrived to us, he was initially distant.
In previous placements, he had not regularly accessed the community and there were many barriers to care due to his previous team not carrying out individualised support or approaching transitions with care.
Our multidisciplinary team of a psychiatrist, positive behaviour support (PBS) practitioner, and a GP, all worked hard to ensure Shay’s behaviours were well managed and worked collaboratively to involved him at every step. They also helped Shay to build relationships with his peers, and provided him with the best diet.
Individualised care
Over time, Shay started to settle in, and with the help of the team and the support from health professionals, Shay started going out every day, even if just for a short walk. This confidence continued to grow and he has since taken part in trips to London and a holiday to Scotland, using public transport whilst there.
The team also found out Shay loves music, instruments and listening to classical music so they found a music therapist who is able to support Shay on a weekly basis. In addition to this we support Shay to access musical instruments and he now also enjoys painting and crafts, supported by staff members.
Since becoming settled at the White House and receiving the right input from PBS team, Shay is not displaying any more behaviours of concerns, or any that occur are well managed and short lived. This has had a positive impact on Shay’s life and he continues to lead a fulfilling and meaningful life.
