*Simone’s story

This journey highlights a rare and inspiring example of truly person-centred care in action.

Discover how Simone’s dedicated social worker worked collaboratively with the team at Priory Aire House to reduce restrictions, empower her to take more control over her daily life, and support her in making meaningful, sustained progress towards greater independence.

I have been *Simone’s* allocated social worker since 2024. During this time, she has been residing at Priory Aire House. Prior to my involvement, Simone was assessed by Children’s Services as requiring 2:1 support, 24 hours a day. This arrangement also included various restrictions that, in my professional opinion, were not proportionate to the actual level of risk presented.

Since her placement at Aire House, I have worked closely with the staff to implement a more proportionate and person-centred approach. Aire House has been fully co-operative and open to collaborative working, enabling us to gradually reduce the intensity of Simone’s supervision and the number of restrictions placed upon her. This has allowed for the development of a more balanced support plan that reflects both Simone’s needs and her right to greater independence.

At present, Simone receives 1:1 support. Ongoing plans are in place to further reduce restrictions, with a focus on enabling Simone to develop essential life skills and increase her confidence in a range of areas. For example, Simone has voiced a clear desire to begin visiting the local shop on her own. In response to this, a phased plan has been agreed; Simone will first attend the shop with staff observing discreetly from a distance, with the aim of progressing to fully independent visits once she feels comfortable and safe to do so.

Additionally, we recently explored the possibility of Simone attending a football match without staff support. This opportunity was identified as a meaningful way for Simone to engage with her interests, build friendships, and enjoy age-appropriate activities within the community. The outcome was extremely positive, and Simone’s experience was noted by both the Court of Protection and the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) team as a commendable example of proportionate and rights-based decision-making.

Throughout this process, Aire House has demonstrated a willingness to consider alternative perspectives and has consistently embraced positive risk-taking. Their commitment to reducing restrictions while maintaining safety has been evident in every aspect of their practice. In my six and a half years in this role, I have not previously encountered a provider so open to progressive approaches that place the individual at the centre of planning and support. It is both refreshing and encouraging, and I believe this is precisely the environment Simone needs to continue progressing.

I would like to extend my thanks for the ongoing support you continue to provide to Simone. Your involvement remains vital in ensuring her needs are met in a manner that promotes autonomy, dignity and wellbeing.
