As a trusted psychiatric hospital for teenagers, we're here to support young people through every stage of their recovery.

Our private CAMHS step-down programme is here to help young people move smoothly from inpatient care back into everyday life. It’s a short, structured course that bridges the gap between hospital and community support, giving young people and their families the tools they need for a confident transition.

Over 6 weeks, we focus on building practical skills, emotional resilience and self-awareness through a mix of individual therapy, group sessions and family support.

What’s included?

  • A weekly 1:1 therapy session
  • Access to an online group session with other young people, taking place every Wednesday and Thursday from 4 to 4.45pm
  • Family therapy sessions
  • Parental guidance and support through our carers’ group
  • Ongoing input from a consultant psychiatrist
  • Support from our experienced nursing team

What the programme covers

Week 1 – understanding behaviour

The first week helps young people begin to recognise what triggers certain reactions and how their thoughts link to their behaviour. They’ll explore positive and negative behaviour patterns, try simple mindfulness techniques and set small, personal goals to track their progress.

Week 2 – managing anxiety

This week introduces anxiety in an age-appropriate way, helping young people understand what it feels like, what can set it off and how to gently face it instead of avoiding it. They’ll learn grounding and calming strategies that can increase their confidence in everyday situations.

Week 3 – low mood

Week 3 focuses on spotting signs of low mood and understanding how thoughts and feelings connect. Young people are supported to try self-care activities, practise emotional regulation and strengthen their social connections.

Week 4 – school-related challenges

This week looks at common school stresses, such as friendships, homework and social skills. The sessions encourage confidence-building, organisation and knowing where to go for help and support.

Week 5 – navigating transitions

Change is a normal but often difficult part of growing up. In week 5, young people reflect on past changes, build problem-solving skills and develop tools to cope with future transitions more confidently.

Week 6 – key relationships

The final week focuses on understanding what healthy and unhealthy relationships look like, setting boundaries and managing disagreements. It also covers trust, safety and sensible use of social media.

Online group guidelines

To make the sessions as supportive and safe as possible, we ask everyone to:

  • Be present – join in, stay involved and minimise distractions
  • Be respectful – listen patiently, be kind and let others speak without interruption
  • Keep it private – what’s shared in the group stays in the group – no recordings or screenshots
  • Take care of yourself – only share what you’re comfortable with. It’s OK to step away briefly if you need to – just let us know
  • Maintain boundaries – focus on your own experiences and avoid giving direct advice unless asked
  • Reach out if you need support – remember, you’re not alone – the team is here to help

What young people will gain

By the end of the 6-week programme, young people will have built a personalised toolkit of practical coping strategies they can use at home, at school and in social situations. They’ll have a clearer understanding of their own thoughts, feelings and behaviour patterns, and greater confidence in managing them day-to-day.

Parents and carers are supported throughout too, with guidance and family sessions to help reinforce the skills the young person is learning, strengthen communication at home and feel more confident about supporting them through their recovery and reintegration.

Education provision

As well as the therapeutic element of treatment, our young people are also provided with on-site school facilities, delivered by specialist and understanding teachers, to ensure ongoing access to education and build their confidence within small supported groups.

In summary:

  • Our education provision is Ofsted-registered and approved
  • Each young person receives bespoke, 1:1 tutoring if required
  • Personal development sessions, which may focus on career advice, or social and emotional skills, are incorporated into schooling through group sessions
