Our strength is that we can provide a seamless transition for the individual as they progress between higher and lower dependency services.

People within our acute service are supported to step down to local recovery and rehabilitation (R&R) services, such as Priory Lichfield Road and Priory Beverley House, when they are ready and if it is appropriate for them.

Our PICU services have been designed to support people in a severe phase of illness, who cannot be managed in acute services. Information for family and friends

What is your visitation policy?

Risk assessed by the team. Home visits are supported with or without staff, dependent on the results of assessment and legal status.

Will I be involved and kept up to date with my loved one’s care and wellbeing?

The wellbeing of the person we support is our top priority, and we limit the exchange of information to the professionals engaged in their treatment. We don’t divulge information to visitors or family members without the person’s consent. Upon arrival, we will talk to the person about their preferences when it comes to information sharing. We adhere to the principle of seeking permission before sharing, except in cases of safety concerns for both the person in question and other people in our care.

Will my loved one be able to have a phone or call me?

Mobile phone use is individually assessed for each person staying with, and agreed by the MDT.

What type of things are families expected to provide, and what is provided by the home?

People staying with us are asked to bring nightclothes, slippers, day clothing and toiletries. Towels and bed linen are provided.

What are the bedrooms like?

Each of the bedrooms has en-suite facilities. There is also a communal bathroom available on each ward, use of which is approved and agreed by the MDT.

Are external doors kept locked?

Although all of our wards have locked doors, people staying with us on an informal basis can request to use therapeutic leave. If this is agreed by their consultant, a full risk assessment is completed prior to a person leaving the ward. We respectfully ask that people don’t leave the hospital grounds until it has been agreed as part of their treatment plan. This is so that the person’s safety is ensured and support can be accessed when needed.

There may be times when it is assessed that it is safer for a person to go out escorted, either by staff or by friends and family. This will be discussed with the person fully beforehand.

People who are detained under the MHA can be prevented from leaving the ward. Any leave they do have, both escorted and unescorted, will be reviewed and approved by the MDT and responsible clinician.

What do service users eat and how do meal times work?

Each ward has a designated dining room for people to use. Mealtimes on the ward are protected which means there are no visits, meetings or activities that take place during this time, to ensure staff are available to support. People staying with us are able to fill out menu choice forms and identify dietary requirements and preferences.

How does laundry work?

Each ward has its own laundry room with washing and drying machines. Detergent is provided and staff are available to support people with using the machines, if needed. Bed linen is washed by the hospital.

Is there anything they can’t bring or have?

At Priory Hospital Barnt Green, we try to adopt the least restrictive way of working. However, in order to keep all of our patients and staff safe, there are items that we have to prohibit and restrict. Items that will not be permitted under any circumstances are as follows:

  • Alcohol and illicit drugs
  • Legal highs
  • Non prescribed medication, including over the counter and herbal remedies
  • Wire coat hangers
  • Explosives (including fireworks)

Depending on a person’s risk, as determined by their consultant, the following items may be allowed or managed under supervision:

  • Recording devices and cameras. However, if it is felt this is compromising the confidentiality of others, it may be removed
  • Razors and aerosols
  • Glues and solvents - often found in arts and crafts materials
  • Caffeinated and high energy drinks, due to interference with some types of medication and the effect they can have on a person’s sleep
  • Glass and metal containers, such as cans
  • Leads or wires over 20cm in length
  • Items of clothing with strings, such as jumper strings, shoelaces, dressing gown ties, belts and trouser strings

Are pets allowed?

Unfortunately, pets are not allowed inside the hospital.

How do activities work?

There is an extensive list of activities available to the people staying with us. These include:

  • Breakfast group
  • Community meetings
  • Mindfulness
  • Kitchen skills
  • Fitness
  • Community skills
  • Creative expression
  • DBT skills
  • Yoga

Do service users and families have an input into the service user’s care plans?

People staying with us are encouraged to have an active role in inputting into their care plans. Regular one-to-one sessions are held with their named nurses and healthcare assistants, who will discuss all aspects of their care. We always have the person’s best interests at heart and important information will only be shared between the professionals involved in their care. Neither will we give detailed information to visitors or relatives without the person’s permission. On admission, we will discuss with the people staying with us who, if anyone, they would be willing to share information with. We do not share without consent, unless it is on the grounds of safety, both for the person we support and other people in our care.

What are the car parking facilities?

There is free car parking available on-site. Please note, cars are left at their owner’s risk.

What is the smoking policy? Can service users buy cigarettes?

Priory Hospital Barnt Green is a smoke free hospital. Our team are able to support people with nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), if requested. People staying with us are also able to vape in their bedrooms or in the courtyard, once they have been individually risk assessed. Smoking is not permitted anywhere on the hospital premises.

How is treatment accessed and funded?

We don’t take referrals directly from individuals and families. Instead, the first step will be for you to reach out to the person’s GP so that they can be referred and funded through the correct NHS channel. Depending on the type of support needed, this could include local authority funding, NHS funding, joint funding between the local authority and NHS, or direct payments. Please note, referrals for NHS or local authority funded services must come from a referring organisation.

We also provide a private service where funding can be accessed via private medical insurance, or individuals can self-pay. For more information, please visit Priory Hospital Barnt Green.
