Adapting our addiction treatment programme during the coronavirus outbreak
The coronavirus outbreak has led to many of us having to adapt to a lifestyle that is completely unfamiliar. For people experiencing alcohol and substance abuse issues, this situation can be incredibly challenging.
If you are in active addiction or addiction recovery, you may be worried about being ‘high risk’ due to an underlying respiratory issue associated with smoking or inhaling substances, or you may be concerned about the impact that alcohol and drug use can have on the immune system. You may also be dealing with loneliness during self-isolation, which is known to have a profound impact on those with addiction issues. These fears can be overwhelming, and become negative catalysts for unhealthy behaviours.
In this video, Priory’s Pamela Roberts explains how our addiction treatment team have been working hard to quickly and effectively adapt our practices so that we are able to safely provide addiction support.
Lucia shares her experiences of addiction treatment during COVID-19 at Priory Hospital Chelmsford. She talks about how the treatment has been adapted, what she is looking forward to when she goes home, and her plans for recovery. She also provides advice to others who may be experiencing addiction issues, and who may feel that their behaviours are worsening due to the current COVID-19 situation.
For people who have battled addiction issues, connection and routine are key to recovery and maintaining sobriety. In this video, Pamela Roberts, provides practical and useful tips to help people to focus on their recovery during this time.
We have the expertise at Woking to deliver high quality addiction treatment and therapy for substance addictions such as alcohol and drug addictions, as well as a range of behavioural addictions including gambling, love and sex, shopping, and internet addictions. We are also able to offer a comprehensive, medically assisted withdrawal detoxification process for drug and alcohol addictions, as required, delivered in a safe and controlled environment. Our medically assisted detox programme is the safest and most effective way to detox.
We provide an evidence-based programme that is tailored to individual needs, all structured within NICE guidelines. The Addiction Rehab Programme at Priory Hospital Woking is an intensive, 28-day residential programme. As part of this, we will introduce assignments according to individual needs and specific issues. You will also have the opportunity to alleviate any physical symptoms that you may be experiencing as a result of your addiction, through our detox process, as well as participating in a rigorous therapeutic programme in order to address the underlying triggers and causes for your addictive behaviours and patterns, and help you to develop healthier ways of managing life as you go forward from treatment.
From the start of our son’s treatment we were made to feel welcome by all the staff. During his treatment at Priory we received excellent advice and education which opened our eyes to our emotions, behaviours and the recovery we needed to undertake.
The family support sessions provided a channel of communication, gave us and him confidence to raise issues and emotions that we had been afraid to broach before for fear of upsetting the other, and to look at these in an open, non-confrontational way.
What we have learnt and experienced from Priory is practised nearly every day now and is part of our life. Thank you to all at Priory.
- Parents of a former addictions patient at Priory Hospital Woking
Addiction treatment at Woking takes an integrative approach. Integrative therapy, or integrative counselling, is a combined approach to psychotherapy that brings together different elements of specific therapies. Integrative therapists take the view that there is no single approach that can treat each patient in all situations. Each patient needs to be considered as a whole, and counselling techniques must be tailored to their individual needs and personal circumstances. We also draw from the well-known 12-Step addiction treatment approach, which provides a set of guiding principles outlining a pathway to recovery and supporting the ethos of change.
It goes without saying that substance and behavioural addictions can have a hugely detrimental impact on your quality of life, and can cause a whole host of long-term problems. However, it’s important to know that these complex conditions are treatable, and the most crucial step in order to commence with effective, professional addiction treatment is to seek help. At Woking, our expert addiction treatment team work in collaboration with our patients to develop person-centred care plans. You will be involved in all decisions made about your care and benefit from a truly bespoke treatment experience, in order to produce the most positive and long-lasting outcomes for you as an individual.

What addictions are treated at Priory Hospital Woking?
At Woking, we are able to provide high quality treatment for a wide range of substance and behavioural addictions, including:
Alcohol addiction rehab
Alcohol addiction, also known as ‘alcoholism’ or ‘alcohol use disorder’, is characterised by drinking alcohol in an excessive and repeated manner, to the extent that you become physically and psychologically dependent on alcohol in order to function on a day-to-day basis. Furthermore, the negative consequences of alcohol addiction can impact all areas of your life including family, friends, social interests, work and education. Without specialised treatment, alcohol addiction can cause a variety of devastating physical and psychological consequences, and can even result in death.
Drug addiction rehab
Drug addiction is characterised by taking or administering drugs in a continuous manner, until this results in physical or psychological dependence on the drug. Drugs may consist of illegal substances such as cocaine, heroin or ecstasy, or can refer to legal prescription drugs. Illegal drug addiction sometimes develops as a result of curiosity, peer pressure or to supplement or enhance addiction to alcohol. Prescription drug addiction is often the result of taking a certain drug for a legitimate medical reason before going on to abuse this or using the drug recreationally. Either way, drug use can soon become a serious problem.
Cocaine addiction rehab
Cocaine addiction is a common form of drug addiction that we treat at Woking. Cocaine is a dangerous stimulant drug which usually comes as a white powder and can be snorted or injected. Cocaine use results in intense and prolonged feelings of euphoria which makes this drug highly addictive and causes tolerance to build rapidly.
Other behavioural addictions that we are able to treat at Woking include:
In addition, we understand that addictions are often underpinned by other mental health problems including conditions such as depression, anxiety, stress, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and eating disorders. As such, our multidisciplinary team are also able to offer established psychological interventions for mental health problems that co-occur alongside addictive behaviours, in order to address the underlying cause of your addiction, as well as the addiction itself.

We also take a person-centred and holistic approach to treatment, drawing upon all of the specialists and treatment options that are available, as well as ensuring that you receive treatment from the best specialist for your individual needs, in order to reach the best possible outcomes.
Medically assisted withdrawal detox in Woking
If you are struggling with an alcohol or drug addiction, a necessary first step in your addiction treatment journey may be to undergo a medically assisted detoxification or ‘detox’. Detox is the process by which all traces of harmful, addictive substances are removed from your body, in a safe, medically assisted, and clinical environment. Detox at Woking usually lasts for seven days, but this length of time can vary according to the level of an individual’s alcohol and drug use. Our detox process is facilitated by the 24-hour presence of on-site doctors and nurses, all of whom are able to administer medication in order to control any unpleasant withdrawal symptoms that you may experience. You can read more about the alcohol detox and drug detoxification programme on our detoxification pages.
Residential addiction treatment
Inpatient (residential) addiction treatment provides you with much-needed structure, round-the-clock care and monitoring, as well as removing you from the negative influences and temptations of your usual daily life. Treatment includes twice-weekly meetings with your allocated consultant psychiatrist, intensive therapy, ongoing nursing and medical care, and multidisciplinary team input.
At Woking, we offer a holistic approach to addiction treatment, integrating a variety of therapy models, theories and techniques, and we also provide access to regular 12-Step fellowship meetings, tailored to cater for the nature of your individual addiction. During therapy sessions, the underlying reasons and triggers for your addictive behaviours will be explored, and an additional area of focus will be on providing you with strategies and tools during our relapse prevention workshops, enabling you to manage situations and events post-treatment, continuously improve your lifestyle and ensure a positive future.
