What is Priory Clinic Woodbourne?

If you’re looking for support with your mental health, Priory Clinic Woodbourne in Birmingham provides specialist assessments, personalised mental health support, therapy and psychiatry through its outpatient services.

Priory Clinic Woodbourne is separate from the inpatient hospital service at Priory Hospital Woodbourne. The hospital provides more intensive, residential treatment for people who need to stay on site, while the clinic is designed for people who can continue with their daily lives while accessing specialist support.

Appointments are designed to fit around your life, with outpatient support available through a combination of face-to-face and online appointments, depending on the service and your individual needs.

Starting with an assessment

Your assessment options depend on your age and whether you plan to pay privately for your care or use private medical insurance.

For adults paying privately, Priory offers both digital and virtual assessment options. Both assessments include free, unlimited access to a wellbeing app. For children and young people, Priory offers a digital assessment.

£49 digital assessment

The £49 self-pay digital mental health assessment involves completing an online questionnaire about how you’ve been feeling and what’s been happening in your life. Your responses are then reviewed by a Priory therapist, who provides recommendations for next steps. These may include further assessment, one-to-one therapy, psychiatry or another form of outpatient support.

£99 virtual assessment

Alternatively, the £99 virtual assessment involves a video consultation with an experienced therapist, with in-person appointments also available. Following the assessment, you’ll receive a report with recommendations.

£69 children's assessment

For children and young people whose families are paying privately, Priory offers a £69 mental health assessment. The digital assessment begins with an online questionnaire powered by beseen, designed specifically for children and young people aged 4 to 17, with input from their families or carers. This provides an initial opportunity to explore the young person’s mental health needs and identify appropriate next steps.

If you’re using private medical insurance (PMI), please contact Priory to discuss your options. The team can guide you through the available routes and help you understand the next steps.

Therapy

If your assessment suggests that ongoing support may be beneficial, Priory Clinic Woodbourne can help you explore suitable outpatient therapy options tailored to your individual needs.

Therapy provides a dedicated space to talk through the challenges you’re facing, better understand your thoughts and feelings, and develop practical strategies to manage them. Depending on your circumstances and treatment goals, this may involve approaches such as

  • Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)

  • Dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT)

  • Eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR), or

  • Family and relationship-based therapy

Your therapist will help identify an approach that best suits your needs.

Therapy may be recommended on its own or alongside psychiatric support, depending on your assessment and individual circumstances. Your ongoing support will be guided by your needs and progress, with the aim of helping you develop skills and strategies that you can use beyond your appointments.

Psychiatry support

Psychiatry is provided by a medical doctor who specialises in mental health. At Priory Clinic Woodbourne, psychiatric support may include consultant assessments to understand your mental health needs, the severity of your symptoms and the level of care that may be appropriate.

Following an initial assessment, your psychiatrist may recommend treatment options, including medication where appropriate, and arrange ongoing reviews to monitor your progress and consider whether your treatment needs to change.

Depending on your individual needs and goals, you may benefit from psychiatric support, one-to-one therapy or a combination of both. Your recommended care will be tailored to your circumstances rather than following a standard programme.

If your assessment indicates that you need a more intensive level of care than the clinic provides, the team can discuss appropriate next steps with you, including other Priory services that may better meet your needs.

Specialist assessments at Priory Clinic Woodbourne

Following your initial assessment, you’ll receive recommendations tailored to your individual needs. These may include further specialist assessment, therapy, psychiatric support or another form of care.

If you’re exploring an autism or ADHD diagnosis, a specialist assessment may be recommended to help you better understand your experiences. Priory offers autism assessments for adults and children, as well as private virtual ADHD assessment. If you go on to complete a full assessment, you’ll receive an outcome report explaining the findings and recommended next steps.

You don’t need to know exactly what type of support you need before getting in touch. The assessment process can help you explore your experiences, understand your needs and identify which type of support may be appropriate.

Meet our team

Priory Clinic Woodbourne is supported by a multidisciplinary team of experienced clinicians, including consultants, therapists and other qualified professionals. The specialist involved in your care will depend on your assessment, needs and the type of support you're receiving.

How the clinic works

Start with an enquiry or assessment

You can get in touch with Priory to discuss your needs and available options. For many people, the first step is Priory’s digital mental health assessment, priced at £49 for adults and £69 for children and young people. The assessment helps the clinical team understand what you’re experiencing and identify what further assessment or support may be appropriate.

Your information is reviewed

A qualified clinician reviews the information you've provided and considers what type of assessment or support may be suitable. You may be recommended for further assessment, therapy, psychiatry or another treatment pathway.

Attend your appointment

Depending on the service you're accessing, appointments may take place online or face-to-face. Priory's outpatient services are designed around hourly appointments, with treatment delivered on an ongoing basis where appropriate. As an outpatient, you can attend your scheduled appointments while continuing with your usual daily life and everyday commitments.

Receive support that's suited to you

If further treatment is recommended, your care will be guided by your individual needs and goals. Your progress and support requirements can be reviewed over time to help ensure your care remains appropriate.

Is Priory Clinic Woodbourne right for you?

Priory Clinic Woodbourne may be suitable if you're looking for a professional assessment, specialist diagnosis or ongoing outpatient support without needing to stay in hospital.

It may be a suitable starting point if you:

  • Want to understand more about changes in your mental health

  • Are looking for a professional mental health assessment

  • Are considering an ADHD or autism assessment

  • Would like one-to-one therapy

  • Think you may benefit from psychiatric support

  • Want support that can fit around work, family or everyday life

As an outpatient clinic, Priory Clinic Woodbourne provides assessments and support for people who can continue daily life while receiving care. It does not provide inpatient care, day care programmes or aftercare services. If your assessment indicates that you may benefit from a more intensive level of support, the team can talk you through the available options and help you understand the next steps in your care pathway.

Where inpatient treatment is clinically appropriate, this pathway may include a referral to Priory Hospital Woodbourne, which provides inpatient mental health treatment on the same site. The aim is to help you access the level of care that best meets your needs, with recommendations guided by your individual circumstances and clinical assessment.

FAQs

Is Priory Clinic Woodbourne different from the hospital?

Priory Clinic Woodbourne is part of the wider Priory Woodbourne service in Birmingham, which offers both outpatient and inpatient mental health care. At the clinic, you attend appointments for assessments, therapy or psychiatric support while continuing to live your daily life.

If your assessment indicates that you need more intensive support, the team can discuss the next steps with you, which may include inpatient treatment at Priory Hospital Woodbourne, located on the same site. The aim is to help you access the level of care that best meets your individual needs.

Do I need a GP referral, or can I refer myself?

You can generally contact Priory directly to enquire about private assessments and outpatient support, without needing a GP referral. However, referral requirements may vary depending on the service you’re interested in.

If you plan to use private medical insurance, check with your insurer before booking, as you may need authorisation or a referral from your GP to access cover.

What happens at the first appointment?

If you're starting with a digital assessment, you'll complete an online questionnaire covering your mental health, experiences and concerns. Your responses are then reviewed by a clinician, who can recommend appropriate next steps.

If you're attending a full assessment or therapy appointment, your clinician will talk with you about your experiences, current difficulties and what you'd like help with. They'll use this information to understand your needs and discuss the most appropriate next steps.

Can I have appointments online?

Online appointments are available for a number of Priory outpatient services, although whether an appointment can be provided remotely depends on the particular assessment or treatment you're accessing. Priory's outpatient service offers both online and face-to-face appointments.

When you enquire, the team can explain which options are available for your particular needs.

Who will I see?

You may work with different clinicians at different stages of your journey. For example, the clinician who reviews your initial assessment may not be the person who provides your ongoing therapy or psychiatric care. The professionals involved will depend on the support you need, with recommendations informed by your assessment and subsequent care.

Will I see the same person throughout my treatment?

Not necessarily. Different stages of your care may involve different clinicians depending on the type of assessment or treatment you need. For example, the professional who reviews your initial assessment may not be the same person who provides ongoing therapy.

Your care is based on the information gathered throughout the assessment and treatment process, so the clinicians involved can understand your needs and work towards the same treatment goals.

Does my private medical insurance cover treatment?

Priory works with many private medical insurers, and some mental health services may be covered depending on your policy and level of cover.

Because policies differ, you should check directly with your insurance provider before arranging treatment to understand what is covered, whether you need authorisation and whether any excess or other costs apply.

What if my needs turn out to be more than the clinic can offer?

Your assessment is intended to help identify the level of support that's appropriate for you. If it becomes clear that you would benefit from more intensive treatment than outpatient care can provide, this can be discussed with you and alternative options considered.

Priory offers different levels of support, including outpatient, day care and inpatient treatment. The aim is to help you access the type of care that matches your needs rather than expecting you to fit into a particular service.
