About our service

Our approach to support

With the right structure, relationships, and encouragement, we support residents to strive towards greater independence, rather than needing the highest levels of clinical or restrictive care.

We work on person-centred, co-produced support plans, and we believe that living your life to the fullest starts with having a genuine say in your own care. Residents are supported to make their own choices, from small everyday decisions, to the bigger goals they're working towards, including how they spend time in the community.

Our support approaches include:

  • Positive behaviour support (PBS), following the PROACT-SCIPr-UK® framework
  • Personal goal planning, reviewed regularly with each resident

The Outcomes Star™ framework also helps residents to set goals and see their own progress reflected back to them – a powerful part of living their life on their own terms.

Pathways

Whyatt House sits within Priory's wider network of healthcare, residential and supported living services, giving every person we support a genuine pathway. Not a single static placement, but a route towards greater independence over time.

Each person has a bespoke pathway plan, tailored to their needs and reviewed regularly, which might lead towards supported living, a return closer to family, or simply a fuller and more independent life within the service. For people moving on from more restrictive settings, having a clear, well-supported next step is often the single most important part of their journey, that is central to what ‘live your life’ means at Whyatt House.

Our facilities and environment

Whyatt House has been designed to feel like a home, not an institution, with wheelchair and mobility access where required and personalisation of space throughout. These facilities have been shaped in co-production with residents and their families, so the home reflects their choices, not ours.

The service also provides:

  • Comfortable communal lounge
  • Kitchen that residents can use to build everyday living and cooking skills
  • Very large secure back garden
  • Room for sensory adaptations if required
  • Option for a quiet or sensory breakout room

Every space has been thought through with resident independence, dignity, and comfort in mind, because where you live should feel like it belongs to you.

Our team

Our highly experienced team at Whyatt House includes a dedicated PBS practitioner, access to clinical psychiatry input and a director of autism.
Every team member completes Priory's specialist mandatory training, along with additional autism-specific training therefore, support is tailored to the needs of each individual we care for. Above all, our team share a single purpose: helping the people we support to live their life, in whatever way that means for them.

Family and friends FAQs

How does home leave work?

We are happy to support home visits and leave, with the consent of the resident, as part of helping them live a full and connected life beyond the service.

Can friends and families visit?

Yes, we don't restrict visiting times and warmly encourage friends and family to visit. We'd just ask for advance notice where possible, to make sure it works well for everyone living at the service.

Will I be involved and kept up to date with the progress of my loved one’s care and support?

Yes. We keep families informed of progress and wellbeing wherever appropriate, and families are always welcome to call or visit to catch up on how things are going.

What are the bedrooms like?

Every bedroom is comfortable and welcoming, and can be personalised to reflect the individual living there, because it's their home, and it should feel like it.

Are external doors kept locked?

Yes, our external doors are kept locked to ensure the safety of our residents. However, every resident will be risk assessed to determine the level of security needed to keep them safe.

What do residents eat and how do meal times work?

Residents are supported to choose and help prepare their own meals, with a focus on a well-balanced diet. Getting involved in the kitchen, where residents are able to, is part of building everyday life skills, not just eating.

How does laundry work?

Our staff team support residents to their own laundry and this is treated like an activity. We will always ensure residents have clean bedding and clothing.

Who does the housekeeping and domiciliary tasks?

We have a housekeeper who ensures the service is maintained.  We also encourage the people we support to engage in domestic tasks, and life skills.

Is there anything they can’t bring or have?

Residents are not allowed to bring illegal substances onto the premises. Other items that may pose a hazard may be restricted, subject to a risk assessment.

How do activities work?

Everyone has their own personalised activities planner, built around what's genuinely meaningful and enjoyable to them. Our team organise a range of activities both at the service and out in the community, in line with our live your life approach.

How will residents be supported with their behavioural needs?

Our PBS practitioner works with each resident to understand their needs and put the right support in place, with an individual PBS plan and staff trained in the correct strategies. We follow the PROACT-SCIPr-UK® framework, which favours the least restrictive practice possible, always working towards restraint reduction, not relying on it.

Do residents and families have an input into the care plans?

Yes. We encourage families and any wider support providers to be involved in care planning wherever appropriate, and residents are supported to play an active role in shaping their own support so it genuinely reflects what they want.

What are the car parking facilities?

On street parking is available.

What is the smoking policy?

Residents can smoke in a designated outdoor smoking area. Smoking, including vaping, is not permitted inside the building.
