About this location

The Acorns is a supported living service, which provides 24-hour support to seven adults who have a profound and multiple learning disability (PMLD), including those with physical disabilities.

The service is located in Newport, in Wales. The property, which forms part of Priory Supported Living South Wales, falls within the Newport City Council local authority area and is managed by Inclusion Housing, a housing provider. We are situated on a housing estate down a private drive, off the main road and within a few minutes’ walk to the local shops and town centre.

Our tenants are supported by our specialist team to have a good quality of life, to make choices about the activities they enjoy, and live as independently as possible. At The Acorns, we are committed to reflecting the guidance of The Reach Standards in everything we do. This means we work with our tenants to ensure they receive the right support to help them achieve their goals and reach their full potential.

Our approach to support

Everybody who lives at The Acorns has their own person-centred support plan, which is co-produced with input from the individual, their family members and professionals.

We aim to enable each tenant to make their own choices about the support they receive. This may include support in a number of areas, such as personal care, moving and handling, managing budgets and finances, medication management, support with health care and appointments, support maintaining relationships, help with domestic tasks, and how to maintain a tenancy.

Our support approaches at The Acorns include positive behaviour support (PBS), monitoring specialist health conditions, and supporting people under community Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS). In addition, our team receive specialist staff training, bespoke to the needs of each individual we support. This includes:

  • Buccal Midazolam training
  • Epilepsy training
  • PROACT-SCIPr-UK® training

Everyone who lives at The Acorns is supported to pursue their own interests and hobbies, both in and outside the home, and are encouraged to take part in activities which are meaningful and fulfilling to them. In-house activities include:

  • Reflexology
  • Sensory sessions
  • Beauty pamper sessions
  • Ball play
  • Water play
  • Arts and crafts

Community activities include:

  • Swimming
  • Music therapy
  • Art classes

  • Holidays and day trips

In addition, we focus on supporting tenants to grow their independence. For some people, this may mean developing their daily living skills within the home. For others, this could be accessing work or educational opportunities in the local community.

Through our network of healthcare, residential and supported living facilities, we provide unique care pathways which enable the people we support to progress towards greater independence. Every individual we support is provided with a bespoke pathway plan, tailored according to their individual needs. We aim to ensure that each person is supported to live a fulfilling and active life in the community.
