Bowden Lodge, a Priory care home in Sheffield providing personal care to adults with mental health conditions, has been rated ‘Good’ overall and ‘Outstanding’ for being well-led by the Care Quality Commission.

In the report, inspectors highlighted the home’s exceptional leadership, strong learning culture and highly person-centred approach, which together help people achieve positive and lasting outcomes.

The service on Prince of Wales Road supports adults with mental health needs, including those who have spent long periods in hospital or secure units, to develop daily living skills, build confidence and progress towards more independent living, such as supported living placements.

Bowden Lodge is part of Priory’s national network of mental health and adult social care services. Nationally, 89% of Priory adult care services are rated ‘Good’ or better by regulators, which is 13.6% above the national average.

Inspectors found that Bowden Lodge remains ‘Good’ in the assessment categories of ‘safe’, ‘effective’, ‘caring’ and ‘responsive’, and has risen to ‘Outstanding’ for being ‘well-led’. They reported that people were protected from harm, staff felt well supported, and the home continued to deliver consistently high standards of care.

Residents and their families spoke with warmth about the support they received, describing staff as understanding, approachable and consistently focused on people’s best interests. One person told inspectors: “They understand me. They know what I like best and what I do not like”.

Relatives shared similar experiences, with one commenting: “We know they are getting properly looked after. They always have [my relative’s] best interests at heart.” The environment itself was also praised for its high standards, with one resident noting: “It is spotless everywhere.”

Support at Bowden Lodge is shaped around each person’s goals and preferences, with staff helping people build confidence and develop the skills they need for greater independence. Inspectors noted how the team supported people to manage risks while continuing to encourage participation in the everyday activities that matter to them, from learning to cook and managing their medicines to becoming more confident using public transport.

Leadership at Bowden Lodge was singled out as a central strength. Inspectors described the management team as capable, compassionate and inclusive, with clear vision and values that were deeply embedded in daily practice.

Staff spoke about leaders who consistently went above and beyond to support them during challenging periods, with this commitment contributing to a stable, motivated team and ensuring continuity of care for residents.

Paige Taylor, Manager at Bowden Lodge, said: “I am incredibly proud of our team. Our focus is always on supporting people to live their lives the way they want to, building their confidence and independence so they can move on to more independent living when they are ready. This assessment reflects the hard work, compassion and commitment of colleagues every day and the trust that people and their families place in us.”

Rebekah Cresswell, Chief Executive of Priory, said: “This is a fantastic achievement for Bowden Lodge and a real testament to the strength of its leadership and the quality of care and support being delivered every day. The ‘Outstanding’ rating for being well-led shows how a positive, inclusive culture can transform people’s experiences and outcomes. The team is clearly making a profound difference to the lives of the people they support, helping them to feel safe, valued and hopeful about their future. I am very proud of what they have achieved.”
