Priory Healthcare opens New Huntington’s disease ward following a £1 million investment
- The service will help to fill a nationwide demand for beds for people who require specialist support with Huntington’s disease, with approximately 12 out of every 100,000 people in the UK affected by this genetic condition
- New service provides state-of-the-art facilities and person-centred treatment for people at varying stages of Huntington’s disease
Priory Healthcare, part of the Priory Group of Companies, has recently launched a new specialist Huntington disease service; Warwick Lodge – located at Burton Park, Melton Mowbray.
Priory Healthcare has invested £1 million in this dedicated service, which will provide tailored support, designed to meet the needs of people at varying stages of Huntington’s disease. The 15-bedded, mixed gender unit is set over two floors to enable the discrete and sympathetic management of these differing stages.
Warwick Lodge has a full multi-disciplinary team and a Clinical Director of Services who specialises in Huntington’s disease.
All the 15 bedrooms are en-suite and patients have access to a spacious garden and several communal areas. In addition, there has been significant investment in state of the art equipment.
Priory has been delivering Huntington’s disease services for over 10 years and Warwick Lodge has been developed with the expertise of its existing services and clinical teams in Hertfordshire and Bristol. The service model is also aligned to best practice guidance of the Huntington’s Disease Association.
Priory Burton Park is located in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire. Burton Park is an inpatient rehabilitation service, which provides specialist neurobehavioural rehabilitation for men and women with an acquired brain injury, including traumatic brain injury and stroke or a progressive neurological condition. It now has a total of 50 beds following the expansion. The hospital is owned by Priory Group, which specialises in mental health treatment and runs mental health hospitals across the UK.
Tracie Huckerby, Hospital Director, said: “This is an exciting opportunity for Burton Park and all involved in making this happen. Staff on site enjoyed the opening and look forward to working with patients on the new ward.”
Warren Irving, Managing Director for the Central region at Priory Healthcare, said: “We are proud to offer this leading service for patients with Huntington’s disease. There is a nationwide shortage of beds for people who require specialist support with the condition, and Priory is pleased to be able to provide them with highly specialist support that is specific to their personal needs and wishes.”
