Priory Hospital Arnold rated ‘good’ by Care Quality Commission: “The service is performing well” say inspectors in new report

Date: 29th July 2024

Priory Hospital Arnold has been rated ‘good’ by the Care Quality Commission, in a new report released today [Monday, 29 July] following an unannounced inspection.

The Nottingham hospital is an inpatient acute and psychiatric intensive care unit (PICU) for males and females struggling with a wide range of mental health conditions.

The service has been rated ‘good’ across all five assessment areas - comprising ‘safe’, ‘effective’, ‘caring’, ‘responsive’ and ‘well-led’ domains - and has been rated ‘good’ overall.

“The service is performing well,” inspectors said in the new report, which contains a comprehensive range of positive observations.

CQC inspectors wrote: “The service provided care and treatment in a way which made patients feel safe, supported and listened to. Patients we spoke to felt they were treated with dignity, respect, felt they were treated as individuals, and were encouraged to be involved in their care and treatment plans.

“Staff completed comprehensive patient assessments including regular physical health checks and delivered evidence-based care and treatment.

“Family members and people who knew patients well were all encouraged to be involved in the care and treatment of their relatives. Staff were visible and available to patients, supporting them to maintain their independence, choice and control. Staff received adequate support, breaks and rest periods, which allowed them to deliver care in a safe and effective way.

“Staff supported and encouraged patients to provide feedback on their care and responded to feedback given.

“Managers implemented action plans, strategies and processes which had worked well and had improved the overall governance of the service. We found the provider had implemented processes, which were evidence based and measurable with outcomes being used to further improve the service and what it offered. Where required, lessons had been learned and communicated from incidents, which were used to drive improvement and innovation.”

Priory is the UK largest independent provider of mental health and adult social care services, with 84% of its services rated ‘good’ or better by regulators.

Priory chief executive officer Rebekah Cresswell said: “We are privileged to support some of the most complex mental health patients in the country, providing care and treatment to people when they need it the most. Our leaders and colleagues at Priory Hospital Arnold have been working extremely hard to deliver the highest standards of care to the people we support, so we are delighted to see CQC recognition for their efforts.”

Lucy Stupple, Priory Hospital Arnold hospital director, said: “We are proud to see the quality of service our patients receive is being recognised by the CQC. This is a really important service for people in Nottingham and beyond, offering some of the most specialist mental health support anywhere in the UK. We will continue to work with our partners and commissioners in the NHS and local authorities, to provide specialist care and treatment, and will continue to strive to further develop the service with our patients and their families.”
