Priory Hospital East Midlands rated ’good‘ by Care Quality Commision: mental health patients are treated with “dignity and respect“, say inspectors
Date: 18th September 2024
Inspectors from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) have praised the care provided to mental health patients at Priory Hospital East Midlands in a new report.
The hospital has been rated ‘good‘ by the CQC following an unannounced inspection, with the report highlighting staff provide “compassionate and caring“ treatment in a way which makes patients feel “safe, supported and listened to“.
Priory Hospital East Midlands, located between Nottingham and Mansfield, is a 37-bedded service, providing specialist acute and psychiatric intensive care unit (PICU) wards for female adult NHS patients.
The hospital is now graded as ‘good‘ across all five individual assessment categories, ‘safe‘‚ ‘caring‘, ‘effective‘, ‘responsive‘ and ‘well led‘, and is therefore rated as ‘good‘ overall.
“At this assessment we found the service had made significant improvements to the environment. We saw staff treating patients as individuals, with dignity and respect,“ the report said. “Staff were visible and available to patients supporting them in maintaining their independence, choice and control.“
Inspectors praised the hospital’s “holistic approach to patient assessment, care and treatment” and highlighted multiple examples of best practice shown by staff in the ways they included patients in decision making processes.
“Staff attended multi-disciplinary meetings where patients were involved in discussions about their care in a co-ordinated way. Patients had regular one-to-one sessions with their named nurse to ensure they had a clear understanding of their care and treatment and could ask questions.“
The leadership team at the hospital was also widely complimented, including for improved governance, as inspectors wrote: “Managers implemented action plans, strategies and processes which worked well and improved the overall governance of the service.“
Hospital director Kevin Mafukidze, said: “Our team at Priory Hospital East Midlands work hard every day to provide the highest quality of care - supporting people with a wide range of mental health conditions. We strive to support patients in their recovery so they can live their life to the fullest, so it is very pleasing to know that inspectors saw the quality of the service, and the report is reflective of the teams‘ dedication to delivering great care.“
Rebekah Cresswell, Priory chief executive, said: “I’m proud of the brilliant, hard-working, compassionate team at Priory Hospital East Midlands, and delighted to see them receiving the recognition they deserve. Since the last inspection, they have also opened a new ward to continue to support patients with much-needed services in their area. The highly specialist support and treatment they are providing is making a huge difference to people’s lives.“
Priory is the UK’s largest independent provider of mental health and adult social care services.
Emergency hospital admission rates for patients who have self-harmed is significantly higher in the East Midlands than the national average. Earlier this year, Priory Hospital East Midlands responded to increased demand for mental health services by expanding its provision, creating additional specialist support for people in the region through new acute ward for individuals experiencing severe, short-term episodes of mental illness.
