- Inspectors praise staff for treating patients with kindness, dignity, and respect
- 26-bed hospital supports men aged 50+ with complex mental health needs in a low secure setting
The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has praised Priory Hospital Suttons Manor near Romford, Essex, for treating patients with “kindness and respect” and involving them as “partners in their care” in a new inspection report.
The hospital, based in Stapleford Tawney, is now rated ‘Good’ across all five assessment categories – safe, caring, effective, responsive, and well-led – and therefore ‘Good’ overall.
Priory Hospital Suttons Manor is a 26-bed specialist forensic low secure service for male patients aged 50 and above, providing step-down care from high and medium secure facilities.
The service supports people with complex mental health issues and low-level physical healthcare needs, helping them achieve their personal goals and prepare to move into the community or less restrictive environments.
Inspectors, who issued the report following an unannounced inspection in March, said: “Staff treated patients with kindness and compassion and knew the individual patient well. Patients’ views were sought and listened to.”
They praised the hospital’s caring approach, noting that patients “were supported and treated with dignity and respect; and involved as partners in their care”. They also found that “people were safe and protected from avoidable harm” and reported that patients described staff as “good, caring, engaging, friendly and accommodating”.
The leadership team was also commended, with inspectors writing: “The service was consistently managed and well-led. Leaders and the culture they created promoted high-quality, person-centred care.
“Managers made sure there were enough qualified, skilled and experienced people who received effective support, supervision and development, and worked together effectively to provide safe care that met people’s individual needs.”
Everyone at Suttons Manor works tirelessly to support people with a range of mental health conditions and to provide the highest quality care every day. I’m proud that the inspectors recognised this dedication, and that our colleagues have received the credit they deserve.”
Priory chief executive Rebekah Cresswell said: “I’m delighted that the commitment and dedication of the team at Suttons Manor has been recognised by the CQC. The right support is vital to every patient’s recovery, helping them move to less restrictive environments, gain greater independence, and live their lives as fully as possible.”
