Priory, the UK’s largest independent provider of mental health and adult social care services, has opened a new supported living service in east Hull, further enhancing the organisation’s provision in the region.

Priory Falkland House, which comprises 12 modern self-contained flats for people aged 18 to 65, has been developed to provide specialist accommodation alongside tailored care and support.

Six apartments are on the ground floor with disabled access and six are on the first floor accessible by lift. Each flat includes a spacious living area, open-plan kitchen, bedroom and bathroom, with access to a secure garden.

Residents at Falkland House will receive a person-centred support plan, co-produced with input from the individual, their family and professionals involved in their care.

Support focuses on promoting independence and community integration, with staff helping residents develop life skills such as meal preparation, travel training and managing tenancies.

Staff also specialise in positive behaviour support (PBS), an evidence-based approach designed to help people with autism and learning disabilities. PBS has been rolled out across Priory’s residential and supported living services, leading to a 51% reduction in placement breakdowns since 2019.

Sarah Perez, managing director for Priory adult care services in the North, said: “Falkland House has been designed to give people the opportunity to live independently, with the right support in place to help them thrive.

“Our dedicated team are committed to delivering safe, person-centred care, and we are proud to offer a service which supports people to achieve their goals and take an active part in the local community.”

Falkland House also plays a role in the local economy, employing and developing a skilled team from the surrounding community. The service works closely with healthcare partners, commissioners and housing providers – reducing the need for out-of-area placements and enabling people to live fulfilling lives closer to home.

Priory’s commitment to raising standards of care locally is further underlined by the recent Care Quality Commission (CQC) report for Priory Supported Living Hull and East Riding, which was rated ‘Good’ across all five key assessment areas: safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led.

Inspectors praised staff for providing “kind and respectful” care that promoted independence and inclusion in the community.

Residents told inspectors they valued their support, with one person saying: “I love it here. I have my independence. I do my own washing and cleaning, but I don’t like cooking so staff help me with this.”

The report also commended the service’s leadership and culture, noting that staff felt highly supported and people were empowered to achieve their goals. One member of staff described it as “the best place I’ve ever worked”.

Rebekah Cresswell, chief executive of Priory, said: “I am delighted to see our supported living services in Hull going from strength to strength. The opening of Falkland House reflects our commitment to creating environments where people can live their lives as fully and as independently as possible.

“At the same time, the CQC rating for Priory Supported Living Hull and East Riding highlights the dedication and professionalism of our staff who work tirelessly to provide the best possible care every day. It is great to see the positive difference our services are making to people’s lives across the region.”
