Neurodiversity refers to the natural differences in how people think, process information, learn and interact with the world. Conditions such as autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), dyslexia, dyspraxia, and others all fall under the neurodivergent umbrella – and it's estimated that around 1 in 7 people in the UK are neurodivergent (source).

Understanding neurodiversity can be an important step towards recognising how these differences may affect everyday life, for both yourself or someone close to you. Seeking a professional assessment can be a helpful way to gain clarity and access appropriate support.

Spotting the signs of neurodivergence

People who are neurodivergent may experience a wide range of traits and characteristics, which can vary depending on their form of neurodivergence, such as autism, ADHD or dyslexia. Neurodivergent people may also experience other mental health difficulties or diagnoses, such as obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), depression or anxiety, although these aren’t typically considered to be neurodivergent in themselves

It’s important to recognise that neurodiversity isn’t a one-size-fits-all concept. People will have their own unique experiences, strengths, and challenges. Traits can also vary over time and in different environments.

Not everyone will experience the same signs, and two people with the same diagnosis might show completely different behaviours or abilities.

Perspectives: Industry experts discussing neurodiversity

5 common neurodiversity traits are:

  • Challenges with focus or attention
  • Sensory sensitivities
  • Differences in social communication
  • Strong preferences for structure and routine
  • Different ways of reading, writing or processing numbers

Neurodiversity online tests

Our neurodiversity tests are free, online tools that can help you explore whether you or a loved one may be showing traits commonly associated with autism and ADHD.

While these tests don’t provide a diagnosis, they offer a quick and simple way to better understand your experiences and whether it might be helpful to seek a professional assessment.

Professional neurodiversity assessments

If you think you need a professional neurodiversity assessment, the first step you can take is to talk to your GP or a healthcare professional. They can discuss concerns and symptoms, and may offer a referral for a formal assessment.

Alternatively, Priory offers private assessments that have shorter waiting times than publicly funded services. A professional assessment can provide clarity, support, and open up access to workplace adjustments or additional support if needed.

At Priory we offer the following neurodiversity assessments:

  • Autism
  • ADHD

We can also offer private assessments for conditions that sometimes overlap with neurodivergent traits. These include conditions such as obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), depression, anxiety and avoidant restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID).

Our support for neurodivergent people
