About this location

Set in the leafy suburb of Edgbaston, close to Birmingham city centre, Priory Hospital Woodbourne provides a diverse range of inpatient services for males and females. We offer acute and psychiatric intensive care unit (PICU) support for adults, as well as a specialist inpatient eating disorder service for adults. Our dedicated multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) deliver personalised treatment programmes to everyone we support.

Our acute services offer support and interventions in times of crisis. Our specialist inpatient acute teams are committed to providing the highest quality of care, supporting patients with a wide range of mental health conditions in safe and highly therapeutic environments.

Exclusion profile

For Maple Ward and Beech Ward:
  • People under the age of 18
  • People with a primary diagnosis of a learning disability
  • People with a primary diagnosis of an eating disorder

For Acer Ward:

  • People under the age of 18
  • People with a primary diagnosis of a learning disability
  • People with a primary diagnosis of an eating disorder
  • People with a current and significant forensic history
  • People with a current risk of self-harm and suicidal ideation
  • People with a current risk of absconsion

Pathways

We offer programmes which integrate healthcare treatment and therapy, which are tailored according to individual needs, in an appropriate setting. Patients can move between higher and lower acuity or be discharged directly from our acute service.

Pathways

Priory’s network of high quality facilities enables us to offer joined-up care pathways with our dedicated residential services. We offer programmes which integrate healthcare treatment and therapy, which are tailored according to individual needs, in an appropriate setting. Our strength is that we can provide a seamless transition for the individual as they progress between higher and lower dependency services.

We have links with other Priory sites across the UK and we can support people if they need to step up or step down to an alternative hospital, for further support.

Our PICU services have been designed to support people in a severe phase of illness, who cannot be managed in acute services. Our dedicated PICU services place us at the forefront of specialised intensive care, and our highly trained teams can support people with complex needs and challenging behaviours, along with co-existing issues (such as substance misuse).

Our aim is to help each patient to become more confident and independent, preparing them to move through their treatment pathway on a step-down basis at this hospital.

Information for family and friends

What is your visitation policy?

We understand that maintaining contact with family and friends is very important to the people we support, which is why we are flexible with visiting times. Visits can be booked via reception, Monday to Friday, and can also be booked directly with the wards, out of hours. Staff will be able to provide information on the best visiting room for each ward. Sometimes, visits won’t be possible without prior agreement with the MDT; should this be the case, we will explain the reasons why.

Will I be involved and kept up to date with my loved one’s care and wellbeing?

Yes, unless the person in our care has asked us not to share some, or all, of their information with you.

Will my loved one be able to have a phone or call me?

Yes, most patients are able to keep their mobile phone when they are on the ward, but sometimes personal phones are restricted, which means people do not have access to them. When this happens, they will have access to the ward phone so they are still able to contact family and friends.

What type of things are families expected to provide, and what is provided by the home?

People can bring in their own toiletries and clothing, but we ask that consideration is given to how many items are brought in, as we only have limited space. Towels and bedding are provided by the hospital. Many patients like to bring in photos of families, carers or significant people in their lives, so that they can personalise their space.

What are the bedrooms like?

All of our bedrooms are spacious, with bespoke fitted furniture. Each room has a double bed, a lockable storage area, a TV with surrounding cabinet and space to keep belongings. They are all single person, en-suite rooms.

Are external doors kept locked?

All of our external doors are locked, except for our separate reception area, which is open Monday to Friday during office hours. Every person staying with us will be individually assessed for any risks to see what security is needed.

How does laundry work?

Each ward has a laundry so everyone can do their own washing and drying. Staff are available to offer support if needed.

Is there anything they can’t bring or have?

We have a restricted and prohibited items list, which will be provided by the ward.

Are pets allowed?

Pets are allowed to come to visit people within the grounds. We also have two therapy dogs, Trevor and Brian, who visit our wards during the evening. Trevor and Brian are specially trained therapy dogs. They are really well behaved and they understand that not everyone will want to stroke them. We will always check whether the people we support want to engage with them.

Do service users and families have an input into the service user’s care plans?

Yes, the people staying with us, and their families, are at the heart of our care plans. Care plans are the written formulation of a person’s current difficulties, along with how we can support them in their recovery. Some patients may struggle to be part of planning their care, and staff will meet regularly with them to reassess this.

What are the car parking facilities?

There is free car parking available on-site.

What is the smoking policy? Can service users buy cigarettes?

Priory Hospital Woodbourne is a smoke-free site. If people are able to leave the grounds they can smoke. When they return, their cigarettes will be taken off them and held securely until they are permitted to leave the grounds again. People who cannot leave the ward or the hospital grounds will be offered smoking cessation products, or if they choose to, they may vape. For those who choose to vape but cannot leave the hospital or its grounds in order to purchase the vape, a vending machine is available.

How is treatment accessed and funded?

We don’t take referrals directly from individuals and families. Instead, the first step will be for you to reach out to the person’s GP so that they can be referred and funded through the correct NHS channel. Depending on the type of support needed, this could include local authority funding, NHS funding, joint funding between the local authority and NHS, or direct payments. Please note, referrals for NHS or local authority funded services must come from a referring organisation.
