Llanarth Court Recovery College
Llanarth Court is a specialist hospital providing medium and low secure care for males and females with mental illnesses and/or personality disorders and for males with intellectual/learning disabilities. We also have a four-bedded open rehabilitation bungalow.
We are a sector-leading example of how providing a wide variety of care settings, and a clear care pathway in the direction of recovery, can benefit all patients.
Llanarth Court is a 114-bedded unit, split across seven wards:
- 3 low secure wards
- 2 medium secure wards
- 1 female unit
- 1 male open rehabilitation unit
Our approach
With occupational therapy, we aim to help people to engage in occupations that give their lives meaning and value. This also helps to mitigate alienation and antisocial behaviour, assisting people to develop their interpersonal capacity, pro-social values, personal identity and skills-for-life participation.
The provision of occupational therapy is a central part of the care provided throughout Llanarth Court, enabling patients to choose to engage in a range of occupations that have meaning and purpose, and are necessary for quality of life.
Llanarth Court runs a 12-week rotational therapeutic programme to help patients to develop coping strategies, insight and self-management of risk, both independently and with support. Programmes are repeated as required, according to individual needs. They include:
- Mental health awareness groups
- Medication awareness groups
- Physical healthcare
- Individualised therapy
- Substance awareness programme
- Dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT)
- Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) programme for managing difficult emotions
- Mentalisation based therapy (MBT)
- Pets at therapy (PAT) dogs
The environment
At Llanarth Court, we believe that the environment in which treatment takes place is just as important as the therapy itself for facilitating recovery. Llanarth Court provides access to:
- Sports hall
- Fitness suite
- Art rooms
- Practice kitchens
- Scenic grounds, access to green space and the countryside
- Social club (pool, table tennis, film clubs)
- Hospital shop
- Horticulture and craft centre (woodwork, carpentry, horticulture)

- Real Work Opportunities
The therapy department supports individuals to retain and learn new skills that support their daily living, with an emphasis upon community reintegration and developing a graded programme for supporting patients back into the community.
Vocational rehabilitation plays an important role in supporting patients to establish meaningful and productive roles. The facilities at Llanarth Court support this, offering a wide range of activities in a number of different therapeutic environments.

Llanarth Court recovery poem
Recovery can be complex, it has branches like a tree
Recovery is personal, recovery is about me.
It starts with just a seed that needs patience, love and care,
Recovery is knowing that I can get there.
The branches start to blossom, the leaves all blowing free,
Recovery is possible, it’s the place I want to be.
