News and achievements 2019
Summer of Wellbeing, ‘let’s get physical’ week
As part of Mental Health Awareness Week and Summer of Wellbeing, the therapy department at Llanarth Court set about encouraging out patients to get involved in our ‘let’s get physical’ health promotion sessions. Spanning over five days, we had an array of activities, both mental and physical, all designed to broaden their perception of physical health and wellbeing, as well as realising the importance of regular exercise, a healthy eating plan, and relaxation.
Sessions were developed to ensure that all of our patients, no matter what their physical capability, could attend and be involved. Our message was to get the patients moving and interacting in sessions that they may have not even thought about doing in the past, whilst emphasising the importance of having a healthy lifestyle. The sessions included:
- Volleyball
- Mindfulness/relaxation
- Team building
- Yoga
- Walk and talk
- Mini games
- Healthy quiz
- Education about mood food
To say that the week was a success would be an understatement! Overall, we had a 46% turnout with some amazing feedback from our patients. We hope to keep our momentum going throughout June, with a hospital-wide walking challenge, but most importantly, we are already starting to see the improvements in lifestyle choices made by patients.
Presentation for the ‘can do’ voluntary project
Patients were awarded certificates for community networking, followed by a presentation of images from their participation in local voluntary and social inclusion activities. These activities included:
- Cooking for the homeless
- Rock climbing
- Building bird boxes for the RSPB
- Furniture restoration at a retirement home
- Farm work
This project continues as an ongoing project for our patients to gain experience in the community, having taster sessions for a selection of local voluntary projects.
Patient participation in interviewing and recruitment
Patients have been involved in the interview process when recruiting physician assistants, occupational therapists and therapy support workers. We have received really positive feedback on this process and involving patients and it will continue to be a rolling programme at Llanarth Court.
