What is outpatient treatment?

Outpatient treatment consists of you attending one of our Priory sites to receive therapy for your mental health concerns. These are usually hourly sessions that take place on a weekly basis. With evening and weekend outpatient appointments available throughout our Priory network, outpatient therapy can be flexible according to your work or personal commitments, meaning that even the busiest people can access the mental health support they need. Outpatient therapy can be delivered at our hospital sites as well as through our extensive Priory wellbeing centre network.

Outpatient treatment can be used to treat a range of mental health concerns, including depression, anxiety, stress, eating disorders and addictions. This form of treatment is useful for people who need ongoing therapeutic input for their mental health difficulties, but their challenges aren't severe enough to need more intensive day care or inpatient treatment.

We can provide high quality outpatient treatment for adults and young people who are struggling with mental health problems.

What is day care?

Our day care programmes are characterised by people attending a Priory hospital for a set number of full or half-days each week, to receive therapy for their mental health challenges.

Day care can be used to treat a wide range of mental health problems, including addictions, eating disorders and mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression and stress. Day care is particularly useful for people who don't need intensive 24-hour care for their mental health concerns, but still need some level of structured, ongoing support.

Bespoke outpatient treatment packages

The type and combination of therapy techniques and formats that you'll receive during day care or outpatient treatment are individually tailored according to your unique needs. The format of the therapy you receive may include one-to-one therapygroup therapy, or couples therapy, depending on which is assessed as being the most suitable for you. We also offer tried and tested therapy types, including the widely-used cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT), eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR), and mindfulness. We also offer an innovative outpatient treatment for depression, known as repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), which is available at Priory Wellbeing Centre Harley Street.

Introducing rTMS at Priory Wellbeing Centre Harley Street

“rTMS is a novel and very promising treatment for depression and is safe and effective. It's particularly useful where other treatment approaches haven't worked and has fewer adverse effects than other pharmacological or physical treatments.”

Dr Leon Rozewicz, Consultant Psychiatrist and Medical Director at Priory Wellbeing Centre Harley Street.

Flexible treatment pathways at Priory

As well as being used as an entry point for many people, outpatient treatment can also be used as a step-down from more intensive day care or inpatient treatment options. Day care can be used as a step-up in intensity from an outpatient treatment programme, or as a step-down in intensity from an inpatient (residential) treatment programme.

The treatment and recovery pathway that you take at Priory will be completely personalised according to your individual needs and the level of support you need for your mental health challenges.
