A Priory hospital located in Market Weighton, Priory Hospital Market Weighton, has been rated ‘outstanding’ by the health and social care regulator, the Care Quality Commission (CQC).
The inspectors said that they observed staff interacting “with patients in a respectful and caring way, talking to them as peers. Throughout our visit, we heard conversations and laughter between staff and patients in communal areas. The staff demonstrated real compassion and empathy when talking to and about patients. Patients we spoke to all described staff in positive terms such as "kind", "supportive" and "helpful"”.
Highly motivated and inspiring staff
The CQC said hospital staff were “highly motivated and inspired to offer care that was kind and promoted patients’ dignity”.
The inspectors spoke of how the hospital provided “holistic and person-centred care to every patient. Staff have a clear vision of recovery”. Patients were involved in interviewing all new staff to make sure they were a good fit for the hospital community.
The CQC continued by saying, “Staff and patients were encouraged to give suggestions as to how the service could be improved. Patients and all levels of staff gave positive feedback on this. One of the patients attends governance meetings on a regular basis to feed back on the patient experience.” The inspectors spoke of how the hospital purchased chairs, a new TV and a pool table after patients requested them at “Your Voice” meetings.
Varied weekly activities
The CQC report mentioned that the hospital’s occupational therapist organised weekly activities, including gardening, shopping and walking. Patients have chosen to volunteer at a charity shop and go to a music concert.
The inspectors praised the nutritiously balanced menu served by the chef. Patients were consulted about the menus offered at the hospital’s food forums. American and Chinese themed nights have been organised.
Patients’ carers were full of praise for the service. The inspectors said, “Carers told us they had been kept involved and informed of updates in their relative’s care and described it as the best service their relatives had used.”
Rated 'outstanding' overall
The hospital was rated ‘outstanding’ overall, and in the 'caring', 'responsive' and 'well led' care categories. It was rated ‘good’ in the 'safe' and 'effective' categories.
The hospital supports male patients with a learning disability, autism, mental health needs and behaviours that challenge.
Patients forthcoming with own ideas
Gary Sparkes, Hospital Director, said: “It is such a huge achievement to be awarded an ‘outstanding’ rating by the CQC. It means such a lot to everyone associated with Priory Hospital Market Weighton.
"I am particularly pleased that inspectors praised the huge emphasis we put on patient feedback. This is because I believe this is one of the main reasons why the care and support we offer is to such an exemplary standard.”
Gair Stott, Managing Director for the North Region at Priory Healthcare, said: “I am so proud that the hospital has gone from a ‘good’ to an ‘outstanding’ rating. Gary is an excellent leader so it's important to thank him for everything he has done for the hospital.'
"I also thank his staff team for delivering care to the highest quality. However, it is important to say that Priory Hospital Market Weighton wouldn’t be the place that it is without our patients giving so much to the service and being forthcoming with their own ideas; I thank them greatly for their support.”
